What Etsy SEO tools can and can’t tell you

Outside tools do not get search-volume data from Etsy’s public API. Their keyword and sales figures are estimates or rely on sources they do not disclose, as the vendor statements below explain. Etsy itself now gives sellers real search data through Marketplace Insights.
Start with Etsy’s own free data
Marketplace Insights shows search and listing counts for terms over the last 30 days, along with related terms. You get up to 15 keyword searches per week for free; Etsy Plus subscribers can search unlimited keywords. Use this to check demand for a phrase before changing a listing around it.
Shop Stats gives you your own shop’s visits, orders, conversion rate, and revenue. It also shows search terms people used to find your listings, plus listing views and orders. Those terms describe traffic that reached you; they are not a count of everyone searching Etsy.
Etsy also describes search-bar suggestions as popular customer search terms. Suggestions offer wording ideas without search counts. Start there if you need phrases to investigate, then check a relevant phrase in Marketplace Insights.
Know what the public API exposes
The documented Etsy API has no search-volume or search-analytics endpoint. It can search active listings by keyword and return a result count. That count measures matching listings, not how many buyers searched.
The API also includes listing views, favorite counts, and a shop’s total sales count. Its listing-view value is updated once a day and only for active listings. These are different measurements from keyword demand. Access to the API does not, by itself, establish access to Etsy’s search counts.
This distinction matters when a tool calls a number “competition” or “volume.” Read the definition before treating two numbers as comparable.
Read each vendor’s explanation of its numbers
The descriptions below are the vendors’ words, not verified performance promises. Free-plan status was checked on October 4, 2026; a page that does not mention a free plan is marked accordingly.
eRank
- What it is for, in its own words: “keyword research, competitor analysis, trend tracking” (eRank)
- What it says about its numbers: Says it uses “data from third-party data analytics companies to provide estimates for search volume and engagement.” See its data explanation.
- Free plan: Yes.
Marmalead
- What it is for, in its own words: “brainstorming tools” to “find the keywords real shoppers are using” (Marmalead)
- What it says about its numbers: Claims “actual search volume” on its pricing page, without disclosing the source on the pages reviewed. Its help article describes engagement as views expected over the next 30 days.
- Free plan: None mentioned on its pricing page.
EverBee
- What it is for, in its own words: “See real sales and revenue for any Etsy product” (EverBee)
- What it says about its numbers: Its help page says “We built an algorithm that takes the data that Etsy shares to make some estimations.” Inputs include views, favorites, listing dates, and prices. The pages reviewed do not disclose its search-volume source.
- Free plan: Yes, Hobby.
Sale Samurai
- What it is for, in its own words: “all-in-one Etsy SEO platform and free Chrome extension” (Sale Samurai)
- What it says about its numbers: Claims “actual search volume” on its homepage. Its pricing FAQ says “We pull data directly from Etsy’s marketplace,” but gives no specific search-volume source or method. The homepage also labels sales “estimated.”
- Free plan: Yes, limited Freemium.
Alura
- What it is for, in its own words: “Find winning products, master SEO, and increase sales” (Alura)
- What it says about its numbers: Its extension page says “The sales numbers provided are estimates,” based on Etsy API listing information including views, favorites, category, and creation date. Its keyword help defines monthly search volume without naming a source.
- Free plan: Yes.
EverBee’s sales explanation qualifies its homepage’s “real” wording. Marmalead and Sale Samurai’s claims about actual volume remain unexplained by the sources reviewed. An undisclosed source is a reason to check a figure, not proof that it is wrong.
Use estimates to choose what to test
Compare relevant keywords within one tool, keeping its settings consistent. Do not compare numbers across tools as if they shared a measurement method. Before acting on a keyword, check it in Marketplace Insights and make sure it describes your item accurately.
Judge the result in your own Stats. Record what you changed and when; use the listing-change testing guide to plan the comparison. For wording, see the Etsy SEO guide.
For help choosing by task, read our Etsy listing tools guide or the comparisons with eRank, EverBee, Marmalead, and Sale Samurai.

Frequently asked questions
Do outside tools get search volume from Etsy’s public API?
No search-volume endpoint appears in Etsy’s documented public API. Outside tools report estimates or make claims about search volume without explaining the source.
Can I see Etsy search data for free?
Marketplace Insights provides real Etsy search data with up to 15 free keyword searches per week. Etsy Plus subscribers can search unlimited keywords.
Are a competing listing’s estimated sales exact?
EverBee and Alura describe their sales figures as estimates. Treat those figures as research clues, not a record of another listing’s orders.
