What it costs to list an item on Etsy

Etsy charges $0.20 USD to publish a public listing, whether or not the item sells, and adds the fee to your payment account when you publish. A listing expires after four months. The publication fee applies before you have made a sale.
When you pay another $0.20
Each manual renewal costs $0.20 USD and starts a new four-month period. Your listing keeps its views, favorites, and web address. Automatic renewal is the default for new listings; you can switch to Manual for one listing or several at once.
If you leave automatic renewal on, renewal at expiry costs another $0.20 and restarts the four months. Auto-renewal continues during vacation mode, so putting your shop on vacation does not stop that charge.
Example with five units and one order
Listing more than one unit costs nothing extra up front. Etsy’s multiple-quantity guidance says you have already paid for the first item when you publish. If several units sell in one order, each unit beyond the first costs another $0.20. If stock remains, the listing also automatically renews for $0.20.
Example: You publish one listing with quantity 5. During the four months, one buyer purchases three units in a single order, leaving two available.
| Event | Listing charge |
|---|---|
| Publish the listing with quantity 5 | $0.20 |
| First unit in the order | Already covered by publication |
| Second unit sold, multi-quantity fee | $0.20 |
| Third unit sold, multi-quantity fee | $0.20 |
| Auto-renew sold fee because two units remain | $0.20 |
| Total for this example | $0.80 USD |
This follows the same article’s distinction between “multi-quantity” charges for extra units in one transaction and “auto-renew sold” when quantity remains. If the last two units later sell in one order, one more $0.20 applies, for $1.00 across five units. That matches Etsy’s own example, where ten units cost $0.20 at publication plus $1.80 as they sell. The total covers listing charges only, before any expiry renewal or applicable tax.
Changes that have no listing fee
Editing a listing is free. Drafts are not charged until publication; Etsy explicitly confirms this for drafts created during vacation mode.
You can also reactivate an unexpired listing for free. Deactivating does not pause its four-month period. If it expires while inactive, you need a $0.20 renewal before reactivating it.
Pattern-only listings have no listing fee and never expire. Adding one to Etsy.com costs $0.20 each time you re-add it. For a listing on both services, a purchase on Pattern does not trigger a listing renewal fee. Pattern itself costs $15 USD per month after a 30-day free trial.
Private listings, currency, and refunds
A private listing costs $0.20 only if the specified buyer purchases it. Its charge happens at purchase rather than publication.
For a non-USD payment account, Etsy converts the listing fee at the market rate when it appears in your account. Depending on your location, VAT may apply to seller fees.
Etsy’s annual report describes listing fees as nonrefundable. Deactivating a listing does not refund that fee. Etsy’s Help Center documents two exceptions. If you refund a buyer and also cancel the transaction, Etsy credits the listing fees to your account. When Etsy deactivates a listing under its Mature Content Policy, it says it refunds the listing fee to your payment account.
Shop set-up fees and listing credits
New shops may also face a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee. Etsy’s Help Center does not publish a fixed amount. It says the cost varies by location and, if applicable, is displayed and charged during set-up. This is separate from publishing a listing.
Etsy’s referral program offers free listing credits, but the number varies with the promotion. Referral credits do not apply if the new seller has already begun setting up a shop. Etsy Plus costs $10 USD per month and includes 15 monthly credits for creating or renewing listings. Unused credits expire rather than rolling over.
