Prepare a digital product listing on Etsy
Updated 2026-10-01
A digital product avoids packing and postage, but it still needs a clear promise. Explain exactly what the buyer downloads, the format, size, compatibility, license or usage terms, and whether customization is included.
Choose the right fulfillment type
Etsy distinguishes instant downloads from made-to-order digital items. For an instant download, upload the actual files when you create the listing. For made-to-order work, explain what information you need and how the finished file is delivered. See Etsy’s digital listing instructions before promising an automatic download.
Show what the file does
Use previews that make the product legible without implying that a physical item ships. State the file type and how a buyer can open or print it. If the product is editable, name the software and version requirements you have tested. Keep the title and tags relevant; a generic “best-selling digital download” phrase is not useful product information.
Price the work
Account for design time, revisions, support, platform fees, and any licensed assets. Zero materials does not mean zero cost. Use the US fee calculator as an estimate if its assumptions fit your shop, then check your own payment account. More listings are not a substitute for one accurate, useful product page.
Frequently asked questions
Are digital products automatically high margin?
No. They avoid physical shipping, but design time, revisions, advertising, Etsy fees, and support can still be substantial.
When do I upload a digital file?
Etsy requires the file when creating an instant-download listing. Made-to-order digital listings use a different fulfillment flow.
